Apply NowEtnyre ChipSpreaders use a hydrostatic, self-propelled drive system to accurately apply a controlled amount of aggregate to a road in the chip-seal process. These vehicles consist of a receiving hopper in the rear into which a truck or live bottom dumps stone. Then, a pair of belt conveyors elevate and move the stone to the front spread hopper which spreads the stone out uniformly across the road. The chip spreader follows the distributor and places a layer of stone on the liquid asphalt. The stone is then rolled into the asphalt by a rubber-tired roller seat it as the asphalt cools and solidifies.
A ChipSpreader can be equipped with either a fixed-width front hopper from ten to fourteen feet in width or they may utilize a variable-width front spread hopper to provide an additional nine to twenty-four feet of spreading width. A computer in the cab is used to sense the ground speed of the machine and control its forward speed, similar to cruise control in a car. This same computer is also used to control the gate opening in the front spread hopper to deliver a constant amount of material onto the ground.
